Tokio Hotel: "En nuestras canciones de amor no hay mucho de autobiográfico"

Tokio Hotel ya no son lo que eran. Después de un año casi desaparecidos, la banda germana liderada por los gemelos Bill y Tom Kaulitz han vuelto con un disco debajo del brazo, Humanoid (Universal), que saldrá a la venta el próximo 6 de octubre en todo el mundo.

Y en este tiempo ha cambiado su sonido, que bebe ahora de fuentes electrónicas, pero también su estética. Una gran cresta corona ahora la cabeza del cantante del grupo, que anda como puede subido a unos altísimos tacones. Su hermano ha pasado de tener rastas a lucir unas trenzas de color negro.

Junto a Georg y Gustav, bajista y batería del grupo, atendieron este lunes en un céntrico hotel de Madrid a varios medios españoles, con los que charlaron sobre su nuevo trabajo y hasta su vida personal. En un ambiente distendido y plagado de bromas, los chicos de Tokio Hotel contestaron a las preguntas de algunos usuarios de 20minutos.es.

¿Cómo es su nuevo disco, Humanoid?

Bill: Nos apartamos un poco de la vida pública durante un año para poder grabar, y de ahí salieron 16 canciones. El sonido es mucho más electrónico, queríamos algo más que una base de bajo y batería, aunque las guitarras siguen ahí. Tanto nosotros como nuestro productor teníamos muy claro que queríamos probar algo nuevo, por ejemplo los sintetizadores.

¿Es cierto que se han inspirado de la ciencia ficción?
Bill: No hemos leído mucho sobre eso y, desde luego, no era algo que tuviéramos en mente a la hora de hacer el disco. Pero nos hemos dado cuenta después de que, efectivamente, Humanoid tiene mucho de ciencia ficción.

¿Tienen fechas ya para la gira? ¿Vendrán a España?
Tom: Empezará a comienzos de 2010, ¡pero eso podría incluir hasta el mes de abril! (risas). Pero no, aún no tenemos fechas para España. (So, what, será metira, no ? O.o)

El nuevo look de Bill es, digamos, raro. ¿Qué le motivó para cambiar de forma tan repentina?

Bill: No tiene nada de estrategia, es más bien una cuestión personal. Nos vestimos como nos apetece en cada momento y ojalá les guste a nuestros fans, pero tampoco es algo crucial. Se trata de sentirse bien con uno mismo.

Tom: Eso dice Gustav, que siempre se siente demasiado cómodo (risas).

Tom: Es que Bill de pequeño jugaba entre la basura... y ahí empezó a vestirse de forma distinta (risas).

¿El tema de los paparazzi tiene un lado bueno?

Bill: Es complicado salir a la calle, sí, pero asumimos que ya no podemos salir solos y sin guardaespaldas y que nos van a hacer fotos.

Tom: Y no tenemos mucho tiempo para nuestra vida privada, por eso el poco que nos queda lo aprovechamos para dedicárselo a nuestra familia y nuestros amigos.

¿Cuál es la mentira más increíble que se ha dicho del grupo en Internet?
Bill: Lo peor que me ha pasado ha sido leer que yo me había suicidado en un hotel.

Tom: O que se había afeitado el vello púbico...

Georg: (en español) ¿Vello público? (risas).

Muchas de sus fans están interesadas por su situación personal, ¿sus canciones de amor están basadas en experiencias propias? ¿Qué han llegado a hacer por amor?
Bill: Por desgracia no hay mucho de autobiogáfico en nuestras canciones cuando se trata de amor (risas). El amor no es algo que no nos importe, pero para nosotros no es fácil conseguirlo. Solemos basarnos en la amistad, en lo que nos cuentan o también hablamos de la nostalgia, de las ganas de encontrarlo.

Georg: Lo dirá por ellos tres, porque yo sí lo he encontrado... Yo he hecho demasiadas cosas por amor.

Gustav: Pues yo he llegado a invitar por amor a cenar en el McDonalds. Pero yendo en coche, claro... (risas).

Si Tokio Hotel hubiesen sido otros chicos y ustedes unos jóvenes normales, ¿serían fans de la banda?

Todos: Sí, por supuesto.

Bill: No queremos que suene pretencioso, pero es que hacemos la música que nos gusta y que nos gustaría escuchar.

¿De qué tema harían una versión? ¿Con quién no se subirían a un escenario?
Tom: No nos va mucho lo de hacer versiones, aunque una vez tuvimos un proyecto...

Bill: Voy a hacer la lista y luego te la paso (risas).

¿Que les dirían a esas personas que al principio no creían que iban a lograr tal reconocimiento a nivel mundial?

Tom: Les mandamos un saludo desde aquí (risas). La verdad es que hemos tenido mucha suerte, porque somos de una ciudad pequeña de Alemania en la que no había ni discográficas ni nada. Sólo hemos intentado estar en el momento adecuado, en el sitio adecuado y, por supuesto, actuar en todas partes.

Bill: Cuando estábamos en el colegio, algunos profesores o compañeros no se creían que queríamos de verdad ser cantantes y que íbamos a conseguirlo. Todo lo que nos ha pasado es una confirmación de que así ha sido. Y encontrarse ahora a alguno de ellos es muy agradable...

Bill : Actually, normally it’s a good thing to arrive in a new country where there are not so much people who know us, we can go in the streets without being recognized, what we’ve done of course, but we also arrive in this country to change it. We want people to know us afterwards, and it was really a success, it worked really well. The concerts were really great so we are really happy !


Interviewer : Well, in France, your are performing the concerts only in German, contrary to the other European countries. Why is the French audience different from the other countries ?
Bill : Euuuuuuuuh (-_-’)
Tom : Actually, in France the difference is that we sing only in German because we feel that the audience likes these songs so we adapt ourselves to that. But we have to say that there is always the same energy which defines the fans in every country so there is really an equality everywhere. We began our tour in Brussels and now we are in Paris, it’s the… 5th concert today
Bill : Yeah
Tom : So it’s really going well and we can’t say that there is one characteristic in particular for each country. It’s really each fan who is individual according to his personality.

Interviewer : Bill and Tom ended school. How do they feel about this ? What is the first thing they did ? And what does it change for them ?
Bill&Tom at the same time : Burn everything !
Bill : Yeah, the first thing we did was to burn and throw all our stuff you know, it’s a thing we’ve always wanted to do, we said to ourselves, the day it’s over, we burn everything.
Tom : If we had to do it again and take again the school ending test we would need everything again.
Bill : But of course, it’s easier now, cause we can concentrate on the band, we are really happy that all this shit is at least over. It was really a horrible nightmare so now it’s really only the band.

Interviewer : You will release a new single that you will test during your concerts. Can you give us the preview of the title you’ve chosen.
Tom : What ??
Bill : What ??? Actually, there is absolutely no new single or new song preparing.
Tom : It may be a rumor.
Bill : We haven’t benn to the studio for the moment. The 3rd album isn’t begun. But of course, there will be new songs, we will go back to the studio this year, we’ll do a 3rd album. There’s a lot of material already, lots of new ideas of text and songs, so it will be done but now it’s not planned.

Interviewer :The fans are really concerned by Bill’s hair so I’d like to know what are the secrets of his cutting, how much time it needs, and does he consider cutting it ?
TH Staff : You can take another question, he will not answer. He doesn’t answer the question about his hair

Interviewer : Do you think it’s possible to have a normal relationship with a girl ?
Tom : It depends on what you mean by normal ! But yeah, why not ? Except that there is of course a problem of time. If we had a relationship with a girl now, everything will happen over the phone but if we’re really in love, it’s really possible, and we could travel with this girl so yeah of course.

Interviewer : Your fans are often hysterical. Do you have an example of a fan who has been too forward ?
Bill : Euuuuhhh (again lol !)…
Tom : Pfff..
Bill :We can’t make a choice, we can’t say this fan or that fan is more hysterical than the other. Our fans are always very crazy, they are always hysterical when we arrive but we like it.
Tom : The worst for us would be an audience clapping.
Bill : Yeah that would be the worst, an audience clapping like we use to see for other artist.
Bill : It would more kind of afraid us an audience clapping. We find it great these screaming, and noise, it gives us energy.
Tom : What we want on stage is to free this energy, to scream. We’re not there to relax, we can do it at home.
Interviewer : Are you stressed before going on stage ? And do you have some rituals before the concerts ?
Tom : The only ritual I’d say is that Georg goes to the toilet to do number two, but otherwise don’t have any particular ritual. 30 minutes before the show, we meet in a room and we say : okay we’re gonna make the stress grow up all together but that’s all.

interviewer : You may certainly know some reality shows such as in France Star Academy or La Nouvelle Star (American Idol equivalent). If you weren’t famous, would you like to participate to that kind of shows ?
Tom : I think we can’t do it as a band so that would clearly be no. But if there would be something like that for the dancers, for Georg, it would be great. Have some dancing movements, for him it would be perfect.
Bill : Each one has to decide if it goes with his own style and if it corresponds with his personality but for us, for what we do and our music style, it’s not the good thing.

Interviewer : Bill was elected as the world’s sexiest man by a Spanish magazine last year. What does he think about it ? And who is for them the sexiest celebrity ?
Tom & Georg : What ?
Georg : Jessica Alba !
Tom : Jessica Alba !
Georg : No !! I said this the first !
Tom : Yeah, even if I don’t need to sleep with her. But for Bill, it was of course the wrong choice. We have to ask ourselves who can have voted that, who can have chosen that ???

Bill : It doesn’t change, it’s still the same as two years and a half ago, it’s still the same mix : Coldplay, Keane…

Question: How do fans around the world differ?
B: I think it depends on every fan. (T: Yeah.) I think you can’t pick a different country and say, OK, German fans are…
T: Yeah, you can’t compare the countries. I think it really depends on the person.
B: So when in America, we’ve got the same energy like the European fans. So that’s something really good. And we said OK, we have the same energy and we have the same feelings.
T: I think we have the fans with the most energy.
B: We have the best fans in the world. I mean, everyone is jealous of us because of our fans, and I can understand that because it’s the best thing in the world.

Question: Which country has the craziest Tokio Hotel fans?
B: I think in Mexico it was…
T: In Mexico it was really crazy, yeah.
B: And also in Spain and Italy (T: yeah) and also in Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv was also crazy. But there are a lot of cities.
T: But also Germany and the US and in Canada. Yeah, you know.
B: It’s hard to pick.

Question: What’s your favorite city to play in?
B: Las Vegas was really, really fun.
T: Las Vegas was great. I liked Philadelphia. I still like LA, you know.

B: And New York of course.
T: But also in Europe, we had great concerts in Europe. I mean, I really liked Paris, I really liked Moscow.

Bill: Creo que en Mexico fue ...
Tom: En Mexico es realmente una locura, sí.
Bill: Y también en España e Italia (Tom: sí) y también en Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv también fue una locura. Pero hay una gran cantidad de ciudades.
Tom: Pero también Alemania y los EE.UU. y en Canadá. Yeah, lo sabes.
Bill: Es difícil escoger.

Pregunta: ¿Cuál es vuestra ciudad favorita para tocar?
Bill: Las Vegas es muy, muy divertido.
Tom: Las Vegas fue muy bien. Me gustó Filadelfia. Y Los Angeles, ya sabes.
Georg o Gustav: Chicago fue agradable.
Bill: Y Nueva York, por supuesto.
Tom: Pero también en Europa, hemos tenido grandes conciertos en Europa. Quiero decir, realmente me gustó el de París, me gustó el de Moscú.
Bill: No es en la ciudad. Creo que es más saber sobre nuestros sentimientos y las fans, así como el lugar y todo. Tokio Hotel ya anunció el lanzamiento de su proximo album para el año nuevo, ahora saca a la venta un DVD “Caught On Camera”. Una de las mejores maneras de que sus fans conozcan más anécdotas sobre la banda. Hemos recibido miles de ANS con miles de preguntas, pero, lamentablemente, no hemos podido ponerlas todas. Bill: El momento en el que sales al escenario, el primer impacto con el público, ahí es cuando sabes si será un gran espectaculo o no.
-¿Cuál es la situación más estresante que nunca habeis experimentado en el escenario?Daniela Marques, Ribeirão Preto - SP - Brasil
Bill: Para mí, personalmente fue durante nuestra última gira europea, cuando me di cuenta de que algo malo estaba pasando con mi voz. Eso fue terrible. Pero nunca sabes que es lo que va a pasar, yo siempre soy el que mas nervioso estoy (se rie) es como una cita a ciegas cada noche.
-¿Alguna vez habeis pensado en llevar el espectaculo a un país africano?Jacqueline Jenice de Oliveira Azize, Maputo - Mozambique
Tom: Nos encantaría tocar en todas partes.

Tom: Nos gusta mucho Portugal. Pero cuando se trata de que todos estamos de vacaciones, elegimos islas solitarias, muy lejos donde siempre brilla el sol.

Bill: Todo lo que necesitas es tu familia y buenos amigos para ser feliz. Y el amor.
